[Some 1996 notes - Ed]
Pictured below are the 1996 winners of the Business Houses Race. In those days there were still 30+ entries (including international crews) to this event which was a head race from Putney Bridge to the Civil Service Boathouse organised by Cygnet. This year we had to make a good impression as the CSSC were on a visit and there was a major charm offensive in operation (hence the hastily affixed CSSC sign on the Boathouse).
Cygnet won the event by a minute over second placed NatWest (who'd won the previous year by a more slender margin).
The crew are being presented with the pennant by Sir Anthony Battishill, chairman of the Civil Service Sports Council, shown standing next to Peter Sly, Cygnet President.
The crew are (standing l to r) Mark Davies (captain), Guy Duparq Braham, David Hammond, Tim Senior (seated l to r), Steve Morgan, Toby Haggith, Caroline Chipperfield (cox), Sam Gourevich, Gavin Estcourt. The same crew won the Senior 1 pennant in the Hammersmith Head and came 81st in the Head of the River after a disappointing race.
The stern four (Gavin, Tim, Mark and Dave) got to the Quarter Finals of the Wyfolds that year.
This BHR winning crew came 81st in the 1996 HoRR...
Here are the 1996 Wyfolds crew beating Lea (who were the current holders) after they had dared to be in the lead up to the Barrier. This took Cygnet through to the last 8.

And we'll finish on a true rarity - a winning 1996 CSLRC eight...
