LXXXV Deneb Captain's Log

22nd September 2020

Dear Cygnets,

I hope everyone is doing well.

Good training session on Saturday, wind against tide, good Tideway experience. On Sunday we had a special sculling day, with 3 separate outings across the day for people to improve their sculling. The first one - Low Tide manoeuvre skills, where we had the seal as a special guest (couldn't take any good pictures, sorry). Then we had a Double and Quads for those with a bit less experience with sculling and/or not so fit. Lastly, we had a double-tide long paddle to Richmond and back for the more experienced scullers. Huge Thanks to Sam and Beth for organizing, Martin for coming in the launch and all of you who took part, I hope you enjoyed it. We are considering doing this excursion more often during the season, will keep you posted.

This week Training sessions are in Fitclub. Please update your availability, and book your slots, to help us plan best.

Last call for Pairs Head (11th October) please let me and Beth know ASAP if you are keen.

Safety:

  • Careful with the slope it is quiet slippery.
  • Keep in mind days are starting to get shorter, please think about using lights if required.
  • Please don't overestimate your abilities, this includes the velocity of the stream.
Everyone should revise the meaning of the flags - you can see the day's weather forecast, tides, including the flag at the bottom of this page - Currently we have black flag which means very low tide and you need to take into account a very fast incoming tide. Bridges and buoys may appear faster than you think, and if you let your bows pointed away from the bank , you may finish very quickly in a complicated position.
  • Follow the guidelines.
  • Book your slot (including landing time):
  • Don't forget the post outing log for tracking purposes

That's all for now.
Have a nice afternoon

Cris
