Phasing a return to rowing, update 15th May
15th May 2020
19.30
Dear all,
Further to the Government announcing on Monday that we are now allowed to do more, and different exercise, and the notification from British Rowing that rowing clubs can now allow single scullers on the Tideway; the PLA has lifted restrictions on recreational use of the river.
The documents attached below set out the measures being taken by the Civil Service Boathouse, Cygnet Rowing Club and Barnes Bridge Rowing Club in order to comply with guidance from the UK Government and British Rowing, designed to limit the spread of COVID-19. Club members are expected to abide by their club's guidance AND the Boathouse Guidance.
These measures shall apply until further notice and Club Guidelines should be read in conjunction with Civil Service Boathouse Executive (CSBE) Guidance, as attached. Please be aware that these can change at short notice, as the situation changes.
- Keep 2m distance from anyone who is not part of your household
- Avoid travelling by public transport; if you have use public transport, wear a non-clinical face mask
- Wash your hands frequently for a minimum of 20 seconds with water and soap, or use hand sanitiser
Timing: The Exec aims to open the limited facilities on Monday 18 May (daylight hours only). This gives the Exec time to set up the boatshop with cleaning stations, move launches away to facilitate both the 2m social distancing and the requirement to wash your hands a lot. The Exec. are also setting up a Google Spreadsheet which scullers going out must use to sign out, and back in, similar to the whiteboard. This is so that we have a record of who went out, when they went out, and who else was around.
Please note: Similar to all other rowing clubs, getting guidance approved and setting up the boathouse to ensure we can keep our scullers safe and healthy, took a lot of time. These are special times, and this certainly doesn't mean a full on return to rowing, they are tentative steps to allow rowing to be used as exercise in certain cases!
In these uncertain times, where things can change at the drop of a hat, can we please ask you to check the club websites regularly to ensure you have the most recent information.
BE SENSIBLE • BE SAFE • STAY HEALTHY • BE KIND
Marjorie Israel, Secretary CSBE • Boathouse Guidelines
Cristobal Cabrera, Captain Cygnet RC • Cygnet Guidelines
Cara Cahill, Captain BBLRC • BBLRC Guidelines
Please do not badger your beleaguered committee and captaincy members by email. They don't like the situation any more than you do and are working very hard, on your behalf, in very trying circumstances [Ed.].
Further updated guidance from British Rowing.

Members of the committee have been working flat-out, in conjunction with BBLRC to get club guidelines and procedures in place. This process is being slightly delayed by BR drip-feeding further changes to their advice every day or two.

Warning: CSSC has been advised of our intention to open up on Monday 18th May; should they inform us that this is not acceptable for insurance reasons, we will have to delay this date.
