    2nd December 2014

    Evening All,

A little later than usual this week, apologies for the inevitable angst and uncertainty this no doubt has caused you all. As you were.

But lots to report on. First up, hearty congratulations to all our successful scullers on Saturday. And remember that merely getting to the start and the finish of the Scullers Head is a success in itself - particularly with the high flow at the weekend, and the organisers giving any doubtful entrants valid excuses (i.e. their money back) to withdraw.

    22:17 79th Sid (TSS)
    23:26 192nd Bart
    24:14 302nd Neil P
    24:33 343rd Guy
    24:55 370th Katy B (BBLRC)
    25:04 379th Jez

Particular congratulations to Bart, fresh from his strong performance in the Pairs Head, who has taken the crown of Fastest Cygnet Sculler. Thanks also to those that came down to help with boating etc. All in all a good showing for Cygnet.

Speaking of which, yesterday saw us hosting the awards ceremony for the PLA Safest Rowing Club On Tideway Gong. Cash, a nice plaque, and free beer, which is nice. It doesn't happen by accident though, so please do keen focusing on sensible safety steps to avoid damage and injury (and incidentally maybe some more cash, another plaque, and more free beer).

    This Week

I'm too late to remind you of Squad Ergs tonight (but if you missed it, you're allowed to do it another day and update the spreadsheet. Encouraged to in fact. Required to). It's 10x 1min on, 1min off, r24, power strokes. Twice.

Thurs - Circuits. Meet at 7.00pm at the club, or 7.15pm at the school.

Thurs - post training food - I think there's a willing volunteer chef on the rota - watch this space.

Sat - morning outings - crew lists to follow.

Sat after outings - the Boathouse Exec (thems that keep the roof over our heads) are looking for anyone to hang around for an hour or so after outings to help with oddjobs round the boathouse. There's bacon butties in it.

Sun morning outings - crew lists to follow.

Two pleas(e) for the active squad

    1) Availability availability availability - we can't get boats out if people are either a) unavailable or - much more frustratingly - b) available but haven't told us via the oh-so-convenient google spreadsheet.

    2) Race fees. There's no such thing as a free race, and the club pays all race fees up-front to make life easier for you all. All the saints and sinners are also conveniently set out on the spreadsheet, so do take a look to confirm whether you owe Cygnet some £ (hint: there's a 50/50 chance that you do).

    Other stuff

It's less than two weeks until the Barnes Bridge Christmas Bash. And minus one day to the deadline for paying for tickets. I daresay they'll still accept your payment if you haven't yet confirmed - you'd be a fool not to.

I think that's all for now.

    24th November 2014

    Evenin' All,

A hive of activity at the boathouse. Off the water, Neil P and a small band of volunteers have brought a degree of order to chaos in terms of the changing room and our collection of blades. Thanks very much to all that gave up some of their Saturday - it makes a big difference.

You should have also noticed that the Boathouse Exec have been hard at work, with a new curtain heater, they keys sorted out, and - excitingly - the latest reincarnation of The Ute (rather like Dr Who, it may look rather different, but it's still very much The Ute). The Ute's primarily for the two clubs, but it is available to book for private hire, via the Boathouse Exec.

Meanwhile on the water, we could barely move on the Tideway for scullers polishing their technique ahead of Saturday's Scullers Head. That kicks off at 9.30am this Saturday 29th, and the numbers to look out for include:

    96 Neil P

    100 Nick B

    114 Katy B (BBLRC)

    160 Bart

    166 Sid (TSS)

    307 Guy

    342 Jez

    396 Jo B (BBLRC)

(That's the start order, there will be a small prize for anyone correctly predicting the order they finish in - I think there are over 40,000 combinations).

Do come down to cheer on clubmates if you can - note also that the river will be closed from 8.30am to 12noon.

    This week

Tue - Squad Erg. 30min r20, feet-out. There was a good turn-out last week, which made a big difference, let's see if we can achieve the dream of 8 oarsmen erging together...

Thur - Circuits. 7.15pm at the school, don't forget a towel and some water.

Thurs food. Sue's cooking this week, let her know if you're sticking around for food (recommended).

Saturday outings will be disrupted by the Scullers Head, above.

Sunday outings should be going ahead as normal - watch this space (and update the availability sheet).

    Further ahead

The BBLRC Christmas Ball is on Saturday 13th, but before then you do need to remember to get a ticket, and indeed pay for it. See emails from Stu.

We're still on the lookout for coxes (many thanks to Jo B for jumping in on Saturday morning and weaving us through the scullers). Do please be as willing as possible to jump into the coxes seat to help out (you never know, you may enjoy it), and do bear in mind If you know anyone that might be interested.

    That's all for now.

    17th November 2014

    Evenin' All,

Last couple of weeks for some, ramping up for the Scullers Head, more below. And for the rest of us, working on and off the water as we look towards Head racing in 8s. Plus some social activities planned, as we're not a million miles from Christmas.

On that subject, those of you that are active will have seen Coach Sue's urging: as soon as Scullers Head is out of the way, i.e. from December, if you wish to race in the Head races from January onwards then you will need to amend your availability to show that you're okay to be included in squad outings. We will hopefully have a number of outings where we will have enough rowers and coxes to have side by side outings - these are likely to be mixed ability initially in order to bring on the less experienced rowers.

A couple of you have mentioned kit - now that it's raining almost constantly and getting a bit colder. We're on it, and are in discussion with a couple of potential suppliers (after our current suppliers messed us around rather too much with our last order). Watch this space.

    This week

Tues - Squad Erg. 2x 4500m, r19/20. 90s rest inbetween the two pieces. Each piece to include 4x 10stroke bursts r30-32.

Thurs - Circuits. Meet at 7.00pm at the club, or 7.15pm at the school. A reasonably healthy turnout last week (in terms of numbers), but we can do better: it's pre-paid for, sort-of fun and very good for you.

Thurs is also post-training food, with Matt B donning the chef's hat this week. See you there.

Sat and Sun morning outings: 7.45am, 9.45am - crew lists to follow. (And well done to all that were prompt this weekend - it made a difference: on Saturday morning Sue was nearly speechless that her crew had got everything ready and done a warm-up run. Nearly speechless).

Also on Saturday morning after outings, Neil P is going to lead a bit of a party to sort out, rig, and paint blades on. Would be great to get a few helpers if possible. Jobs are likely to take most of the rest of the day(light) but the more the merrier and perhaps a few beers afterwards?

    Further Ahead

The entries are confirmed for Scullers Head on Sat 29th Nov. Neil Pickford, Nick Bates, Bart de Groot, Guy du Parc Braham, and Jeremy Pugh will be in Cygnet colours. Plus Sid Suthers in (ahem) red & yellow. Plus Katy Baldwin for BBLRC. That's a big enough field for someone to set up a book..

    That's all for now.
