Cygnet Weekly Update
25th April 2017
All,
Fantastic weather at Sculling Camp and lots of people loosing their single sculling cherries under Tim's watchful eye. And a few choosing to end their scull with a capsize drill and short swim. All part of the learning experience and nothing that experienced scullers haven't experienced whilst they were learning. Good to see so many on the learn to row course at the Bungalow, it will make an eight seem extremely stable after sitting in a single.
Thanks for all those who helping in rigging, trailering, catering (Deon) and respect to Katy, Gareth and Scott who rowed up to the bungalow from the club on Friday.

Cygnet Weekly Update
18th April 2017
All,
There was a change of pace and focus this weekend as we left the MAG and Marj in the boat house and headed out in small boats in glorious sunshine. Developing skills in small boats and especially in singles is the fastest way to improve balance and technique as well as boat and navigation skills. The more people who have the skills and knowledge to steer boats the easier it is to put crews together and ensure everybody gets on the water on squad outings. So it was good to see Vasil, Bjarne and Scott back out in singles, it was Eric, Deon, Mustafa first scull in a quad but star of the show was Niall who after a couple of outings in a quad was out in a single on Sunday (under Tim's close supervision). And everyone stayed dry. The emphasis over the next few weeks will continue to be on small boats and all those who are mastering a single scull should also prepare for their steering test and get familiar with the Tideway Code.
It was the first session of our new learn to row with I think 13 participants which is very positive for future recruitment. Please help out when needed, we need a couple of people to help Alan on this Thursday and Saturday's land based sessions. Let Charlie know if you can make it.
This week:
Tuesday 7pm in the Shed - Weight training assessment and instruction with Tim
Have a strong core is essential to transmit the power from the legs through the body shoulders and arms to the oar. Weight training is an effective way of gaining that strength is had to be done correctly and safely and within each person's current capability. Tim will be assessing the current capability of all those attending and giving specific weights programmes accordingly. Tim will start at 7 so please get to the club as early as possible for a prompt start. There will be a follow on session next Tuesday
Wednesday 7pm Club Run warm up, then 25 x 150m sprint (steps to bandstand) with 1' rest
Thursday 7pm Squad ergo 3 x 1k @ 2k pace, 5 min rest.
Saturday meet at club at 7:05, OTW at 7:30
Continuing in small boats, session 1: Starts, session 2: Water tech 4-8k
Sunday meet at club at 7:05, OTW at 7:30
Session 1: water tech 16k, second session: Sculling ladder
Further ahead
Sculling Camp 22/23 April Note that all squad activity will be a the bungalow for the weekend with main squad outings taking place there before the novice sculler tuition starts at 10:30. For all novices this is the best opportunity to get out in single sculls in a very benign environment which will make it less scary when you go out for the first time on the Tideway!!!. Plus food, drink, BBQ, camping...
Friday 21st April 9am Bungalow row to Hamhaugh Island.
Saturday 29th April Chiswick Regatta - I'll be sending out a list of candidate regattas for the first half of the session in the next 24 hours in a Doodle Poll to gauge levels of interest and plan our regatta campaign with Tim, please complete asap once you receive it.
Have a good week,
See you all soon
Jez
