  • Farewell to the Mountains

    Author: Matt Byrne |

    28th August 2017

    News in brief
A weekend of long miles, flat water and glorious sunshine by the river, and some coxing experience gains for Vasil, Tom, and Mustafa.
Time to hit the winter season running and push those base fitness levels up.

The weekend also saw a good-bye party for erstwhile Bar Steward, Killepitsch fiend, Jagerbomb pusher and occasional Cygnet rowing sub Katie Mountain (Cygnet racing record: P1, W1) and Cygnet club member Ian Mountain (race record: P lots, W3) as they head north to Cumbria. Best wishes for the future, and we look forward to arranging future training camps in the Lake District.

    Social events
Friday evening - Cygnet end of season dinner. See Cris's email for details.
Saturday afternoon - Club Day - please sign up here so the social secretaries have a good idea of numbers: https://beta.doodle.com/poll/9tndmih429ncwkng
Fun sprint racing in mixed crews with BBLRC, BBQ and Beers in the sunshine

Further ahead at the end of October is the annual Henley Lunch. See http://www.cygnet-rc.org.uk/event-henley_lunch.html for details and get signed up.

    Housekeeping
No more organised weeknight outings as the nights are drawing in. Any evening scullers should take lights. We're also looking to give the seniors and development squads experience of coxing and steering, so don't be surprised to find yourself in an unfamiliar seat on the outing plans. (Don't worry too much - we won't let you out unsupervised)

We're also going to re-organise the email distribution lists this week, so you may get a few emails from the google people.

  • Winter is coming

    Author: Matt Byrne |

    21st August 2017

Bit of a wait between updates, so hoping you haven't been bereft of club news for too long.

    Racing:
A win for the self-styled "meatwagon" at Peterborough Summer in Tier 2 4+ (somewhere around IM2/IM3 in recent coinage) wonderfully captured on film by 2nd placed Sheffield here: https://www.facebook.com/promuffy/videos/888920072730/
A good first win under the auspices of the new captaincy team, and we hope that the crew will be able to keep the winning mentality into the winter season with Pairs and Fours Heads coming up.

Unfortunately no pewterware to report from Oxford Regatta, but a good weekend of racing, drinking and camping was had by our most recent LTR graduates (and a couple of extras)

Please send any racing photos to the captain or webmaster for inclusion on the website.

    Housekeeping:
Nights are now drawing in, so please strongly consider lights for evening outings, especially in cloudy weather. Summer racing is now over, so we're looking to get crews lined up and training for the small boats heads between now and Christmas, as well as developing the LTR graduates through the novice squad; a new poll for race interest will be released shortly.

We're also looking to give the seniors and development squads experience of coxing and steering, so don't be surprised to find yourself in an unfamiliar seat on the outing plans. (Don't worry too much - we won't let you out unsupervised) We're also going to re-organise the email distribution lists next week, so you may get a few emails from the google people.

    Availability
We're still trialling this new web-based availability system for August and September, so please have a look at http://www.fitclub.me/club/dashboard?clubId=15 to create an account and request to join Cygnet RC. All the training sessions (up to 3 Sept) are loaded into the Cygnet calendar and it looks like a simpler system to update and change on phones than googledocs
(and outputs a lovely spreadsheet for us admins to use in coordinating outings.)

(keep the rate together as a group. working hard enough not to be able to chat easily.)

    30th July 2017

    Racing Post
No wins at Henley Town, but a good day out was had by all, despite the rain.
Also a belated well done to Ian S on his 1:27.26 in the Sprint distance at the London Triathlon last weekend, 425th/2283

    Safety Note
Unfortunately, the "number of days since a Cygnet boat hit a bridge" counter had to be reset to zero yesterday, we'd nearly got to 3570. The Alan Cox is therefore out of action for the forseeable until he's been to the menders.

In unrelated news, the "number of days since Stu steered into a bridge" counter has also been set back to zero from somewhere around 3570 ... welcome back to the Tideway, Stu. The captaincy plans to ask the PLA to paint Barnes Bridge in a fluorescent shade of yellow to make it easier to spot.

    Housekeeping
Please get the availability up to Oxford on 20th August into the system by close of play on Monday .This in case Tim is available to coach during the week. (Needless to say, we'll need Tues/Weds/Thurs availability for everyone to make outings work ...)

    Race Plans
So far for Peterborough Regatta 12/13 Aug I have: Robin, Ian, Scott, Sam. Anyone else in the senior squad want to race this? Last call for entries.

So far for Oxford Regatta 19/20 Aug from the spreadsheet I have: Jon, Ashley, Mark, Jim, Kay, Eric, Tom, Mustafa, Niall, Cris, Jez, Vasil, Charlie, Me. Please can you all confirm that you definitely want to race, and anyone not listed above who wants to race should let me know and update the spreadsheet. Anyone who can't (or won't) do both days to race please also let me know. Entries have to go in this week. If you haven't already, you'll need to join British Rowing and get gold membership in order to race.
